Under the patronage of HE Mr. Sami Gammoh, Minister of Industry and Trade, Talal Abu-Ghazaleh and Co. International (TAGI) and Konrad Adenauer Foundation in Amman held a special ceremony to mark the launch of “Jordan’s New Draft Competition Law: Achievement Made, Improvement Required” book at Grand Hyatt Amman Hotel.

Deputizing for the Minister, Mr. Hussein Al-Hamadani, head of the Competition Directorate at the Ministry of Trade and Industry said:"I would like to express my gratitude to TAGI and Konrad Adenauer Foundation for publishing this important document. The Ministry believes in partnering with the private sector regarding laws and regulations."

He added:"This book is considered a reference to researchers due to its content. The Jordanian experience is a model that should be followed in implementing laws and regulations."

Meanwhile, Dr. Martin Beck, Resident Representative of Konrad Adenauer Foundation/ Amman Office said:" The booklet we are publishing today is the result of a long-lasting and fruitful cooperation between Talal Abu-Ghazaleh and Co. International and Konrad Adenauer Foundation in Amman. Our Foundation is particularly proud that we — with the invaluable expertise of our highly recommended partner — have been able to contribute to improving Jordan’s competition law."

He added:" The need for a modern competition law has been echoed by public calls for reform. The Jordanian government has implemented a number of policies and plans which aim to enhance the competitiveness of the private sector in the country. These efforts also seek to attract national and foreign investment, but more can be done. We need advanced legislation that takes into consideration the interests of the public good and private enterprises alike."

Jordan to be centre of Arab science e-network

The meeting, held in Amman, agreed that Jordan should coordinate the network

Jordan has been chosen to be the 'brain' of an Arab science network that, it is hoped, will get scientists across seven countries talking and collaborating with each other.

The country will become the hub of new regional science collaborations and the launchpad for projects to get research institutes within countries much better connected through broadband Internet.

Jordan's role was announced in the first annual meeting of the Arab States Research and Education Network (ASREN) in Amman last month (12–14 December).

Talal Abu-Ghazaleh, chairman of ASREN, said that the Internet and associated 'e-infrastructures' were key to getting scientists across the network working together.

Scientists and educational institutes within many countries are linked up via specialised and powerful private networks that are tailored to the needs of scientific projects. These National Research and Education Networks (NRENs) can then be linked together into regional entities.

Yousef Torman, executive director of the Jordanian Universities Network, told SciDev.Net that Jordan would also become a physical meeting point for researchers and academics from the Arab region, and a place where Arab researchers could meet foreign scientists and research funders.

He added that the better connectivity between researchers offered by the network will also reduce the costs of research by sharing resources and reducing duplication.

Salem Alagtash, the ASREN chairman's senior advisor information and communication technology, said that the individual governments were backing the initiative and that ASREN was playing a fundamental role in strengthening — and in some cases helping to establish — the national networks that together make up ASREN.

For example, ASREN helped Lebanon to build its NREN, which became operational last year (24October. (

The Amman conference also called for the acceleration of the third phase of the EUMEDCONNECT project which connects nations' research and education networks. The first and second phases of EUMEDCONNECT, which began in 2004, concentrated on linking Mediterranean researchers with their European counterparts, with the third phase extending this connectivity to Arab countries.

Maha Tutunji, professor of analytical chemistry at the University Of Jordan, told SciDev.Net that networks such as ASREN should "help research to flourish in our region".

But she added that policymakers should make sure that the research subjects addressed through the network are useful for their own countries, rather than dictated by supra-national agendas.

ASREN's member countries are Algeria, Egypt, Jordan, Morocco, Palestine, Syria and Tunisia. The initiative was launched in December 2010 under the patronage of the League of Arab States, the Talal Abu-Ghazaleh Organization and the UN Global Alliance for ICT and Development (UN-GAID).

TAG-Recruit and JNMC Sign MoU

Talal Abu-Ghazaleh Recruitment (TAG-Recruit), one of the leading recruiting agencies in the region signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Jordan Nurses and Midwives Council (JNMC) in the field of marketing recruiting services.

Top Arab group remains committed to Bahrain

The Talal Abu-Ghazaleh Organisation (TAG-Org), the largest Arab group of professional service firms, remains completely committed to Bahrain.

The group has 73 offices across the Middle East and Africa and representative offices in Europe and North America.

In June last year the organisation opened its new state-of-the-art corporate headquarters in Sanabis.

"We remain committed to Bahrain and I for one feel very secure and very confident in the future of the kingdom," said organisation chairman Talal Abu-Ghazaleh.

"I regard myself as both a Jordanian and a Bahraini and nothing is going to change that.

"In Bahrain, there is a culture of stability and it is a model for any small country with limited resources," he said.

"The leadership here is strong and shows a willingness to address problems," he added.

"Many years ago, His Royal Highness Prime Minister Prince Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa, said to me that I pleased him because I upset him," he said.

"That is the mark of a true statesman because he wants to know the facts and hear the problems," he added.

"The way forward for Bahrain and other countries in the region is our ability to co-exist.

"The solution to problems is realising we need to agree to disagree because complete conformity is not good and it is healthy to disagree so long as this is done constructively and positively for the benefit of all.

"We in the Arab world are going through a process of change that is a renaissance which will create a renaissance in the West as the economic balance between East and West changes," he said.

"I believe we have to look at the current global economy with new eyes," he added.

"It used to be that when the US sneezed, the world caught pneumonia. That is not longer the case.

"The US sneezed and the East is doing fine. We both need each other but now things are more of a partnership because we need each other.

"Let me be controversial," he added.

"There is no global crisis. There is a social and economic crisis in some countries in the West. There is no crisis in Qatar, Bahrain or Saudi Arabia.

"What we need is wise leadership and to be able to move forward through evolution rather than revolution.

"This process will take long years and may be a painful one with people making economic and social sacrifices," he said.

"We need cultural change, a new set of standards and belief in the future across the globe.

"This will undoubtedly be resisted by some vested interests and factions looking for new regimes but it is the way forward if we understand each other's points of view and agree sometimes to disagree but still work together," he added.

Operating in an area of the world that is experiencing radical and unprecedented change, TAG-Org is "well aware of and experienced in all aspects of the economic environment, including the social and regulatory factors governing it," he said.

"We recognise the need to systematically develop Arab institutions to build a solid future.

"TAG-Org is meeting this challenge by providing highly experienced specialists who anticipate economic and social trends and evaluate alternatives to determine the most creative solutions for present and future problems," he added.
