Dr. Abu-Ghazaleh Shares His Vision for Restructuring the United Nations with Diplomats from 30 Countries

Abu-Ghazaleh Praises South Africa’s Stance and Global Capitals Supporting Palestinian Rights

AMMAN - HE the Ambassador of the Republic of South Africa to Jordan, Ms. Tselane Mokuena, received HE Dr. Talal Abu-Ghazaleh, founder and chairman of Talal Abu-Ghazaleh Global Digital (TAG.GD). This came during a meeting held at Ambassador Mokoena’s residence, attended by political figures and diplomats from 30 countries worldwide, including representatives from the People’s Republic of China and the Russian Federation.

During the meeting, Dr. Abu-Ghazaleh briefed the attendees on his vision for the overhaul of the United Nations (UN) organization and to his recently-published book “From the United Nations to the United People”, which outlines detailed proposals for restructuring the UN system.

On the same context, Dr. Abu-Ghazaleh referred to numerous public opinion surveys showing a decline in the UN’s popularity among people, especially the youth, asserting the necessity for taking an action to restore confidence in the Organization. Such measures may include adapting a language that engages the youth, promoting the perspectives of key individuals and groups, and strengthening cooperation with civil society institutions, the private sector, and non-government entities across the world.

Dr. Abu-Ghazaleh further went on to emphasize the importance of integrating digital technologies and Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the UN’s operations to make the Organization more people-oriented. He stressed the need to engage the public and youth in decision-making through digital tools and AI, ensuring the creation of an active and engaged global community that reunites to strengthen the mission of the UN.

Moreover, he stated that the Veto Power has become a major impediment to the United Nations. Its repeated use by the five permanent members of the Security Council, in his perspective, has rendered the Organization ineffective and created a widespread belief that the international law is enforced only against the weak, considering the elimination of the veto as the only option.

He, moreover, indicated that the Global South, excluding China, represents more than 60% of the world’s population yet remains insufficiently represented in the UN. While the ten non-permanent members of the Security Council do not hold veto power, and proposals to grant permanent seats for Africa, Latin America, and Asia have been declined. He stressed that today’s multipolar world has showed the double standards afflicting the organization.

Dr. Abu-Ghazaleh referred to the concept of ‘Peopleism’, introduced by Ravi Chaudhry in his book ‘From Capitalism to Peopleism’, reiterating the need to shift from the notion of the “United Nations” to the “United Peoples,” accordingly, the Organization becomes more dedicated to human prosperity.

For their part, the attendees affirmed their commitment and keenness to convey Dr. Abu-Ghazaleh’s proposals that were incorporated in his book to their respective governments and leaders, as the meeting featured a thorough and substantive discussion of these ideas.

At the end of the meeting, Dr. Abu-Ghazaleh highly praised the stance of South Africa, along with various world capitals, for their support to the rights of Palestinian people, especially in light of the atrocities endured by the Palestinians under the Zionist occupation.
