The technology tsunami we are facing in today’s world is leading to a revolution in every aspect of life and business. The advanced level of innovation we have achieved exceeds any former predictions. Technology, it seems, has started to run in our veins, and it is powering everything from our personal lives to huge corporations the likes of which we have never previously seen. From the industrial revolution to today’s computing revolution, man has made quantum leaps in all spheres of human activity because of the technology that is now at our fingertips. Technology has catapulted our world into an unprecedented era.
In our time, the major force of change is the internet which has revolutionized the way in which we live. Society at large now expects information to be a click away through powerful search engines, which are portals to millions of websites and services. The internet has exploded massively since its inception, driving all other related ICT industries as a result. The hunger for more technology and services is a major turning point, with the technological revolution primarily being driven by the insatiable appetite of consumers globally.
With an 'always on' internet, social interaction, goods and services have been transformed and can be consumed at any time of the day, from any provider, from any part of the world. This has made the world a global village and has allowed our physical world to converge with the digital, to deliver faster, better services to consumers who are constantly demanding and expecting more. This merging of realities will become more prevalent as the internet matures and brings on more users, especially the millions in poorer nations who are utilizing mobile internet technologies to transact on the internet. We are at the beginning of this transformative journey and have much to look forward to.
Today, data, not technology, is becoming the real fuel for innovation and inventions in the future. Data is all around us. Capturing that data and making sense of it, unlocking it, and using it to solve real problems. This is the challenge of scientists and engineers currently. Technology has become more than mere gadgets and toys: it is the future of humanity. The advent of the digital age has created an extraordinary moment in civilization, representing a new horizon for mankind bringing a wealth of opportunity and astounding progress.
In my mind, there is no going back from the onset of this age.
The current age of technological advancement is giving birth to disruptive technologies of the future. This refers to innovations that will cause major changes in the lives of mankind, from the ways in which businesses operate, how healthcare is delivered, how governments are run, to how citizens live their lives and everything in between.
It is the future of these anticipated disruptive challenges, the opportunities and how the world will potentially change as a result of them, that were the prime reasons for me to author "The Brave Knowledge World” book. I wrote the book as a factual journey into the future, showing how technology will change the course of human history in the 4th industrial revolution, blurring the line between humans and technology. It is a technological discourse that reveals a symbiotic relationship between man and technology and covers a broad array of disruptive technologies, anticipating many challenges that such technologies may bring.
In the book, I thought to highlight dilemmas and questions that technologists and lawmakers will need to give serious thought to. I encourage public discourse to take place at all levels as the effects are far reaching and not just the responsibility of technologists.
The book matters to anyone interested in understanding how human future could pan out in the face of rapid technological advancement and what needs to be done to ensure that this transpires in a manner that is conducive to human development. This is part of my long-term mission to build knowledge workers of the future and is something that I have been actively working for over the last four decades. We owe it to future generations to empower them with the skills to meet the growing needs of the digital age.
